Practical Information

Location of the Conference Building

The conference building is located at the campus of the Institute of Information Technology (IT), referred to as Informatikum. The seminar rooms of the Winter School are located in house E (Haus E) on campus. A conference office is located in the same building and is managed by Ms Dunja Meyer, Head of the Conference Management of the University of Hamburg.

The student cafeteria, called Mensa, is located in house B on campus. Warm lunch will be served in the Mensa. There are in general four different meals to choose between, of which one is always a vegetarian dish. A weekly menu will be provided upon arrival.

Coffee and tea will be served during the daily coffee breaks.

Internet

A computer room in the conference building is available to all students at the Winter School. The students have free access to the World Wide Web on a daily basis. Daily opening hours will be posted.

Public Transportation

The management of the Winter School will supply you with a free ticket for using public transportation during your stay in Hamburg. The public transportation system in Hamburg is very well developed: You can travel nearly everywhere in the city centre using public transportation, including both busses, the subway and the tram, referred to in German as Bus, U-Bahn and S-Bahn. From most bus stops, a bus leaves every five to ten minutes. Also the underground and the tram travel frequently. On many subway stations an electronic sign on the platform tells you when the next subway will arrive.

How to travel from your accommodation to the conference building

To arrive at the conference building from the hotel, there are two options: You can walk, which will take you approximately 15 minutes. Or you can travel by bus: Take bus number 281 or 181, travelling in the direction of the subway "U Lattenkamp". There are three bus stops between the hotel and the conference building. The final destination is the bus stop "Informatikum". The bus ride from the hotel to the conference building takes approximately 5 minutes.

From the airport to the hotel

Upon arrival a representative of the Winter School will greet you at the airport. Transportation to the hotel is arranged.

From the campus to the city centre
On all busses in Hamburg a number displayed on the bus informs you about the specific route that each bus travels. For example, bus number 4 takes you directly from the hotel to the city centre in approximately 25 minutes.

You will soon learn more about the various travel alternatives within the city area of Hamburg by exploring the public transportation system on your own or together with the other students at the Winter School.
