Cultural Activities

In addition to the academic programme of the Winter School, the cultural programme provides an opportunity for the participants to learn more about the history and the cultural heritage of Hamburg and Germany. Outside of the conference rooms, the students at the Winter School can relax and get to know each other better while visiting various cultural institutions and attractions in the city.

Friday, 15 November 2002
18:00

Group dinner at a restaurant in the city, followed by a guided evening walk in the Speicherstadt, the city district dominated by warehouses connected to the activity in the harbour.

Saturday, 16 November 2002

10:00

Sightseeing tour of the city of Hamburg (lasts approximately two hours).

Afternoon

In the afternoon, some may want to enjoy Hamburg's shopping areas.

Alternatively, a visit to the "Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe" will be organised. The Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe "presents applied European arts from the ancient world to the present, and important collections of East Asian works as well as modern design, graphic work and photographs by international artists. Nowhere else in Germany are visitors made so aware of the relationships between the different cultures and epochs as through the Museum's variety: for example, the debt the Renaissance owes to ancient Greece and Rome, the links historicism shares with previous styles, the ties between European and Eastern cultures or the close bonds between European Art Nouveau and the art of Japan." (Quote from the museum's website: http://www.mkg-hamburg.de/english/)

Evening

Group Dinner

After dinner you may want to relax with a movie of your choice in one of Hamburg's many cinemas, showing both Hollywood productions and international movies from a more "alternative" film scene. Several cinemas show movies in original language, both in English and other languages (with German subtitles). Alternatively, you may want to enjoy the lively area of Schanze/St. Pauli.

Sunday, 17 November 2002
12:00

Visiting the park area Jenisch Park, including the Jenisch Haus. Alternatively visiting the exhibition and the house of the painter Ernst Barlach.

After visiting the museum, we travel by ferry to the harbour. While having dinner, we enjoy the view of the busy harbour area.
